Some of my earliest memories are of my father sitting at our kitchen table and painting Choctaw stickball players, horses and riders, dancers and deer. He worked in a traditional style sometimes known as “flatwork” which has also been called “a pictorial expression of the Indian soul” I am still painting within an evolving version of that style.
My father was influenced by his friend, Alan Houser, the reknowned Apache artist. Later, I was informally exposed to abstract expressionism at the Institute of American Indian Arts, through Fritz Scholder. I went on to attend painting classes at Haskell Indian Nations University under Cheyenne artist Dick West.
Afterward, I painted and traveled with Kiowa artist Robert Red Bird, who was an in-law. I became an artist-in-residence at Indian City, USA. Then, I signed with NI WO DI HI Galleries in Austin, Texas. All this happened during the early days of getting started.
I still love the sweeping run and echo of tribal songs caught and swirled by color and I still love the fast and sudden feel within a painting that we’re all going somewhere together and when we arrive, there may be something strong and holy waiting. In this way I think, I am helping my people remain as living embers of a most beautiful ancient fire.
